Neighborhood heading downhill

Hi, I am a long time resident of Kips Bay--middle East 20's off Second Ave. I have noticed a disconcerting trend in the neighborhood (as far over as Lex and as far north as 32/33rd st) lately of thuggish looking people and more and more homeless. It used to be an nice place to live, now I am concerned for safety. Any thoughts?

They're called "hipsters."

They're relatively harmless.
