How limited is your budget? I've been looking downtown, and there are two classes of properties down there, with "in betweens" being rare.

If you want full-service new conversions, it's going to be around $900 to $1,200 per foot on average. I've seen a couple of good units at 90 William, except the lack of washer/dryer in the unit...which is why I didn't make an offer on a convertible 2 there. But the unit was otherwise REALLY nice. 99 John might also be a good option, if you don't mind the college dorms-like atmosphere. Other bldgs. are significantly more expensive (e.g., 55 Wall, 75 Wall, 20 Pine, etc.), but they are very, very nice (20 Pine is really dark, though).

For no-doorman, no-frills bldgs., it could be as low as $650-$700/ft. although there is a wide range depending on the area, bldg., etc. I've seen some great no-doorman units along Nassau St., but not so much on Maiden or John.

Lord, for all the greenies out there we as a society seem hell-bent on making our lives ever-more dependent on electricity.

And now they've made the ONE major utility in the home that's been working fine all by itself without benefit of a battery or plug since the mid-1800s now dependent on ConEd.

What do these people do when the power goes out?

Matt, from what I understand, using water/electricity is far more environmentally "gentle" than using paper, especially when one considers the production, delivery, and disposal of toilet paper. I think the Japanese are far more environmentally conscious than we are in general. Also, it looks like the unit has the "traditional toilet mechanics" as well, which means that you don't necessarily have to use those advanced features to do your business.
