Discussion about
Forgive me if this has been discussed to death, but what are your thoughts about glass backsplashes? Soon to be outdated or attractive? If the former, what would you recommend? Thanks.
Most of the designers I work with are still using glass as backslashes. Both tiles and full sheets
Oh, hey Primer, I just got your email. Thanks, but I think we've got it all figured out. As for backsplashes, I love glass. Any stores/brands you'd recommend?
I think the glass can achieve a more lasting appeal if you let the material be the star versus the color. I would avoid strong taste-specific colors and go for a more muted or neutral palate. Ask a lot of questions about installation: it is a bitch. It is perhaps more demanding than other finish work to get a visually attractive result. The smallest imperfections in application technique will be picked up by the eye and ruin the end result. If using smaller tiles (1"x2" running bond, for example) consider ordering the premade 12"x12" sheets of any custom color mix you decide on--it helps straight lines upon installation. If incorporating a stainless steel back splash behind the range, be sure to leave 1-2mm gap between the steel and glass or when the steel expands when it gets hot, it can shatter glass that is smack up against it. A friend had a one-piece white glass back splash explode for this reason the first time they turned on the Viking.
palette, not palate :)
I stand corrected. Shouldn't post before coffee.
Rim,
I have a great place if you want a back painted glass sheet, they an do any Benjamin Moore color. They do not install so ask your contractor if he can handle it.
For glass tiles I would just go to Nemo tile. They have the own brand which is very nicely priced
I'm going to be contrarian here and say no glass backsplash unless it's in a metallic color. I think anything in, say, a blue is off-trend at this point and will look dated in a hurry.

Hi guys. I am new to this forum and need a bit of guidance. So, my company is looking to bring aboard some nyc based agents on a freelance basis. We're willing to compensate them handsomely for pushing our services to building owners and property managers. Does anyone know the best way get it out there?
I think the trend is behind us: glass tiles have gone the way of easy credit and Hummers. Even if your financial situation has not suffered, it seems less ostentatious to go with a classic look and spend money in a slightly less obvious fashion, eg. with handmade subway tiles.
rlmnyc, do you like glass backsplashes? I saw plenty of them when I was looking for an apartment. I think it all comes down to what your taste is. Most likely, by the time you decide to resell, there will be a new trend so pick what you like. Personally, I find most glass backsplashes distracting but every tile store I visit has plenty of them to pick from.
Thanks, everybody. I fell fast asleep after my original posting (increasingly common now that we're crawling around nightly ferreting out imperfections for our renovation punch list) and haven't had a minute to respond today. I'm afraid my question is now academic, as my husband vetoed glass backsplashes as eyesores(although the idea of an explosion is pretty compelling). We're going with a square tile that should offend absolutely nobody.
what about a stainless steel backsplash in "tin ceiling patterns"? Thoughts?

i've had our glass blacksplash for 2 years and still love it.

would do it again exactly the same again.
Or stainless steel in a subway tile pattern? I think of seen something on a thread about a fabulous Italian stainless steel tile, used in a prewar renovation
Primer05 - I'd be interesting in the vendor you recommend for a back painted glass sheet. Thanks!
