Discussion about
Hello, About to embark on what I assume will be a total gut renovation of an 1100+ sq ft apartment. (the + refers to a weird sleeping loft that we may or may not keep). We need the floors leveled and replaced, two bathrooms completely redone (one expanded), add skylights/windows etc. etc. We may want to put in a roof deck, if circumstances allow. We have the names of architects that friends have used and liked. How does one pick? What are the important questions to ask? Would love some btdt advice. Thanks.

I should add that we are in a brownstone and not in a situation where there is a list of architects that the building has used in the past.

Try searching discussions on here containing the term "construction oversight." You'll get a lot of threads about architects that you may find useful.

Interview them all in your new home. Talk with them about what you want to do and ask them for input. You'll like some and dislike others; you should choose an architect who will listen, respond, design well, get the job done, and come in under budget. You don't have to be friends with them but you should trust them with your space, your money, and your time.

Find out more about their previous work; visit other renos they've done and talk to folks about working with them. (This part you've started, just by getting references from your friends.)

Don't forget to have a party when it's all over and invite everyone who contributes to this thread!

Thanks both for your wise advice. I have been researching this process over the past many months and have tens of kylewest's threads saved in my folders. KW, thanks for all the wisdom you've shared over the past couple of years, I hope to put it to very good use.

Realized that it is just time to pick up the phone and start the process. Upon scheduling our first architect meeting, I experienced tightness in my chest and shortness of breath...wish me luck! We're very excited but maybe I know too much after all of my research!

Jas,

As difficult as the process is you must embrace and try to enjoy it. There will be some pitfalls and there will be problems. Try to be patient, enjoy it and keep your eyes at the prize. A new home that you will enjoy.
