UWS Memories - 1988's two worst blocks

It's been so long that I actually forgot how lousy 92nd and Amsterdam was. Even in broad daylight there was action with the loudest criminals I ever heard. Why not? The cops avoided it for good reason.

This quote is a classic!

"...we like the mix of classes on the West Side. It's just a question of how low class do you want to deal with?"

Of particular note, though, the UWS was already a "nice" neighborhood in 1988. Many people forget that. My parents always tell the story of apartment hunting on the UWS in the early 1980s and how pricey they thought it was at the time. They found Queens much more affordable (unfortunately for me!)

84th and amsterdam was rough as well.

Crack made the late 80's especially bad.
Music of the 80's didn't help either.
The demonization of recreational drugs, AIDS, a sad economy, man I miss those days.

84th and Amsterdam was horrible. I lived on 84th and CPW and had to go to 86th to get to the Loews at 84th!
