Discussion about
What is a reasonable estimate for totally renovating a medium sized (7' X 23') kitchen in a midtown high-rise building? It will be "high end", but not from a name-brand kitchen company. Thanks for any information/comments on a ball park cost.
Just search discussions using the word "kitchen" - lots of discussions re: costs
First, 7'x23' is not medium. It is large. 23'!? Wow. Thats more than 2x a standard 7x10 galley kitchen. If you are talking about a 23' run of custom cabinetry, even on just one side, with highend design/finishes/appliances/lighting/flooring, you are in the $50,000+ area easily. If you are looking at cabinetry in excess of 20 linear feet, the cost will go upward commensurately. Go to a place like MKBC and you are into 6 figures. I suggest smaller mill shops without middle men if possible to try to tamp costs down a little.
i just did one. appliances appx 15k . cabinets 25k.. counter 10k .
Does anyone cook in these kitchens or are they just for show??
Most NYC people don't know how to cook an egg.
Kylewest is right on again. BB, counters for 10k seems like a lot, did you also use stone for the backsplash?

We cook in our Manhattan kitchen all the time. It's small, but quite utile. It's open to guests, but too small for guests to come in and "help out", so it's ideal. I guess that's why we cook in our kitchen all the time.
Remuddler, I can't help you on price, but I'll say if you enjoy cooking, you'll have a great deal of fun in your new kitchen, and it will be well worth the renovation.
Realistically you are looking at $90,000+ including labor. More likely $110,000 to $125,000. Shocking, I know.
Perhaps this is an obvious point, but for resale purposes, you want to keep what you spend on the kitchen proportionate to what the apartment is worth. Don't put a $100K kitchen in a $750K one-bedroom, or a $50K kitchen in a $2 million co-op.
Sometimes it helps to go to open houses of apartments like yours and see what your cohort is doing.

I believe you mean Calacatta as in the marble, and not Calcutta as in the capital of West Bengal.
