Discussion about
After living through one upper west side co-op rejection and losing another bidding war on the upper west side we are considering making the jump to Brooklyn. What do people think of the Fort Greene / Clinton Hill area these days? Any insights are welcome.
i used to live in fort greene and loved it. i was born and raised in manhattan and it feels very much like the upper west side. transportation is great. nice restaurants. nice park with tennis court. weekend green market. overall a very charming neighborhood, great for taking walks. also has a very artsy, creative feel. i remember walking around and just being completely happy all the time. neighbors are a good mix and everyone was always friendly...the people who have been there for decades and the new ones moving from tribeca, soho, west village, etc. i would never have left but i was renting in a townhouse on south portland, which was sold for much more than i could afford! of course certain blocks are prettier and more charming but definitely one of the best neighborhood i've lived in. i must say though i have been back recently and it has changed a bit...not sure yet how i feel about it quite yet. still beautiful brownstone blocks but somewhat a bit more commercialized now.
Have a lot of friends in Fort Greene, and I love all the trees and how green the neighborhood is. Good transportation access. Lots of cultural choices at BAM -- theater, music, movies. Yummy drinks at Moe's.
i live in clinton hill now and, as someone who was very apprehensive about moving to brooklyn, i have to say that it's wonderful. it's very safe, the streets are lined with trees and brownstones, there are grocery stores, delis, cleaners and salons/spas galore within steps or a few short blocks. but most importantly, it's so inexpensive to live there!
Thank you everyone for your comments.
What do you think about the security of the real estate market in these areas? Do you think that property values will continue to rise? Do you think that the Atlantic Yards project will have a impact on property values (either positive or negative)?
Fort Greene is one of my favorite Brooklyn neighborhoods (along with Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, and yes, Williamsburg, for perspective). It's not too far from Manhattan, has a great feel to it (as alluded to above), and has most of what you want in terms of shopping, groceries, restaurants. I was outbid on a 2BR on Lafayette a few months ago, however not that upset about it with the uncertainty over Atlantic Yards. Call me risk-averse, but the neighborhood will change, and I'm not sure I'm ready to gamble on it yet. That said, there are some of the most beautiful blocks in all of NYC - South Portland was mentioned above, and those surrounding blocks are really great. Clinton Hill is different, but rapidly approaching Fort Greene. Subways are pretty bad once you get far enough west, unless you love the G.
