Discussion about
Why you guys always talk about bars, restaurants in the neighborhood as a positive thing while discussing real estate listings? Do you guys dine out most of the time? I believe a good neighborhood should have no/limited bars, restaurants, and similar entertainment places for family to live in
So move to long island city
This is Manhattan... most folks don't have great kichens, and even ones who do dine out a lot. We pay a lot to live here, precisely to be in proximity to great food and culture.
If you're going to watch PPV and make your own food every night, the suburbs are probably a bigger draw for you than me.
Yeah, agreed. I'm willing to pay more (whether renting or buying) for proximity to great food/drink. I would even add proximity to transportation (duh), good live music, green space, and yes, even a quality 24-hour food market (more valuable to me than most, admittedly).
the best is living on a (relatively) quiet side street and having a plethora of bars/restaurants on both side avenues...
i love cooking, but rarely do due to time or other preferred social obligations, and love the convenience of walking half a block to endless options.
another plus is that im relatively lazy and prefer friends to come to me.. considering my 'nabe has a ton of food options and is centrally located i never have to trek to their eater-less 'nabes, and can spend an extra 20-30 minutes in my pj's/comforter watching bravo as opposed to schlepping it on the train/cab/getting ready.
"the best is living on a (relatively) quiet side street and having a plethora of bars/restaurants on both side avenues..."
So so true. I don't mind having something on the same street so long as it's fairly quiet, but that's obviously not always the case. The ideal sitch is as you described.
Or living on the rear side of a noisy street. (as long as your high enough for views)

Ha, you nailed it...
"Or living on the rear side of a noisy street. (as long as your high enough for views)"
That works for noise, but the entrance can be crowded. And things like having a cab or car stop to drop things off... can be a real pain.
Crowded is safe.
But yes certain "busy" streets can be problematic for car stop/dropping things off. However good for when you need a cab and know how to upstream (for Curbed fans).
And Manahattan has it's share of barless/restaurantless areas. Tudor City blazes to mind.
Re: I believe a good neighborhood should have no/limited bars, restaurants, and similar entertainment places for family to live in
Every time I'm up around prime Park Ave, 5th Ave, CPW, or other 100% residential enclave, I think to myself: "I can't believe people actually want to LIVE here!"
"And Manahattan has it's share of barless/restaurantless areas. Tudor City blazes to mind."
No kidding. Once upon a time, I lived on 78th and Madison, a pretty prestigious address in most people's minds. You try getting a slice of pizza (whether it's decent or not) at night!
I agree...I love living with the bars and restaurants in my neighborhood.
Because I fell in love with the idea of rolling out of bed, being able to walk everywhere and getting eats/drinks/going out right around the corner in college.
With a young family, don't go out as much as I used to and I long ago converted to making most of my food but I still like a semi-lively street scene (admittedly not next door) when I'm going about my errands. Agree with the ideal situation of a quiet side street near all the action on the avenues. Or even a not-so quiet street in the village where IMO the low-rise nature of the buildings keeps it intimate.
Sounds like you would love Brooklyn Heights. (If all you City Folk want to get the BH's local vibe, eat at one of my faves; Noodle Pudding).
I nominate this topic as one of the dumbest posts of 2011!! Caonima, are you that bored?

When I lived in Brooklyn Heights, I was more of a Heights Cafe or Teresa's sort of guy.
"the best is living on a (relatively) quiet side street and having a plethora of bars/restaurants on both side avenues..."
So, so false. Give me a busy, vibrant Manhattan street any day compared to a dark, quiet, lifeless side street. Admittedly, I enjoy being 11 floors up, and I have a great view, but I can't imagine living on any side street.
To each his/her own; your mileage may vary. "The ideal sitch" is in the eyes and wallet of the beholder.
Many to most people do not want a suburb in Manhattan. As posters in the upthread stated maybe the suburbs would be a better location if that's what you prefer. Why live here if you don't want the proximity to bars and restaurants? This is exactly the problem with the "NEW" NYC. Let us make it just like the suburbs for those of you who do not want to commute. How I loved the old days living in the village with the ability to do what I want whenever I wanted. This isn't Scarsdale.
Cao - no bars? Are you a teetotaler? If so why live here? Should we rush restaurant and bar owners out of the city just like the small business owners so your family is all comfy? It's not about cooking.. I cook almost nightly since the recession but I still need restaurants to at the very least order in from. Bars? That's entertainment.
>Cao - no bars?
Google his name if you want an idea of who you are talking to
Thanx c-burg
Yet another mf wast'in our time
Caonima, your mother is a broker!
Because we like to drink and eat!
Oh Falco. I googled - bwah. Should have known.

Is that what it is, columbiacounty? When you were all down and out - destroyed personally and professionally, you tried to sue, but lost?

i'm truth?
Come on c-burg,
No one thinks you are 'Truth'.
If SE was a cigerette you would be a hacking cough.
Annoying but worth putting up with for the pleasure.
Truth is cancer
Look at all the really good contributors that have died off thanks to 'you know who'.
Remember when this chat board was interesting?
I dind't say I was truth, I was reflecting how in one post columbiacounty talks about lies then in another post he says "i'm truth?"
Nothing to do with me.

You are so sweet. Hey, your 'c' and 'h' keys seem to be mixed on your keyboard.

Who?
But how many more didn't show up because certain contributors felt that their opinion was the only correct one, and excoriated and harassed others who disagreed? How many posted one or two times, got attacked, and never showed up again?
And now how many don't show up now because of streeteasy's system for new posters which significantly delays a new poster's post and then doesn't even put it at the top?
