Record stagnation

This is a CNBC article indicating record stagnation in the housing market. http://www.cnbc.com/id/45325063 Will this structural issue stay as is? Or will it improve? While I write this, the S&P 500 index, a barometer of economic health is down over 2% due to the deficit super-committee failure. Pls leave your comments.

....and if people do sell (or walk away), they are more than likely going to rent. Will rentals and their underlying investment properties now drive the market? If so, what of the venerable NYC co-op, with its' limited usefulness as a rental property?
