Discussion about
I am renovating a kitchen in Lower Fifth (Greenwich Village). The apartment is a 1,000 sq ft one bedroom and I am gutting all aspects of it. I have a designer and she has recomended using IKEA cabinets as they have a clean look and are very well-priced. I am sure there has been discussion of this but what would you recomend for a project like this? Do you keep it simple or go more high end? I know IKEA does discontinue some lines but I am making sure I use soemthing simple that they will keep around. Any experience with these kitchens? Thanks a lot in advance guys...
The base cabinet system is Akurum - which has been around for a long time. You pick the door styles (and those change over time). The most attractive thing about Ikea to me is that the base remains the same, and the doors are inexpensive and easy to change. I have a wall of Ikea kitchen cabinets that I use to store the kids' toys and it's perfect. I love the glides and I don't have to worry about dings in the doors because I can change them easily. My favorite cabinets (I don't have them) are the high pantry cabinets with stainless steel fittings.
Adel is a very popular door style and there are rarely stock issues.
Nexus is a newer line, but stock can be hard to find. Ditto Rubrik.
The oak styles (different names) go in and out of production, but some kitchen designers like to paint them to customize.

Bam,
More and more people are using IKEA. I have a millshop and would make much more money if I custom make a kitchen but I find I am recommending IKEA often. We like to take their cabinets and we are able to custom make them. I am going to post a couple of them that we are completing now at

You hired a deisnger to tell you to use IKEA cabinets? I could have told you that for free.
Thinking aloud. If labor component of any job is a significant percentage, I would use a higher quality of material than Ikea.
Anyone ever hear of thi place? They seem to be releatively affordable:

And for appliances, you can get them at a huge discount at Sears Outlet. I'm going to be headed out there in the next few months for a new dishwasher.
Yea Sears Outlet always has low prices, but they are floor models or have scratches and dents. Anyone have experience with Homeclick.com? They have really competitive prices with free shipping, but no experience with them.
Thanks a lot for your comments. The blog and your website are very helpful.
The IKEA guys should be of great help to you. I have recently bought my kitchen doors and cabinets from IKEA and the service was quite satisfactory. However, I made good amount of research to find out products and cabinet designs that will suit my kitchen built space. Your creativity is your best companion.
