FiDi/South Street Seaport for Families?

I moved from Tribeca to San Francisco in 2007 and am moving back to NYC after 5 years w husband and baby, now 2.5yo. It seems a lot has been happening down near South Street Seaport and areas south of Tribeca in general, and as we are looking for bang for buck when it comes to apt space, I became curious as it seems we're priced out of Tribeca now. Any feedback on activities/amenities for families in FiDi, particularly near South St Seaport? Are there playgrounds, children's art/music classes? Is it all still college grads on John Street and delis that close at 5pm? Any buildings we should be looking at? Any advice on the hood from the family perspective is greatly appreciated.

Financial District is great for getting the most for your money. Prices have remained relatively low, and will skyrocket in two or three years once the WTC is finished and FiDi blends into Tribeca and Soho.

The area is now full of supermarkets (Gristedes, Jubilee, Zaytuna and one other), drug stores now open 24 hours, and dry cleaners. It's not just college students and grads on John Street. Seems like mostly professional people and families. Things definitely stay open later and on weekends now -- Jubilee and a couple of the Duane Reades are open 24 hours -- more restaurants and food places keep opening up.

Come on down and check it out!

One building that has had some units available in it, and they seem to sell is 150 Nassau St. Landmark condo reno in 2003 right on City Hall Park. Across the park is Tribeca so it seems to be great bang for you buck. It is also right next to the new Frank Gehry Building which has the brand new Spruce Street School located in it. This is where the overflow students from PS 234 in Tribeca will be getting 'housed'. The units all look very nice, very well done, nice finishes. Just a thought

No, not much has changed. It's still loaded with overprivileged yuppies and their puppies, trying to convince themselves (and others) how "hip" they are as they try to get the most "bang for their buck" in one of the most overpriced neighborhoods in the city.

skcnyc, have you considered Fort George? It's only a 75 minute A train ride away from Tribeca after a short walk. In Fort George, you can fit all of your proper Stickley furniture in your apartment, and no one needs to be convinced how "hip" the neighborhood is.

They built a pretty cool playground across from the seaport that you should be able to find some info about online. Downside it is gets crowded with tourist's kids but is a good option in summer. They also finished some of the promenade south of the seaport and it looks pretty good.

The school in the Gehry building is not for overflow but carved out its own area, which is basically east tribeca and the area immediately south of the bridge.

OWS has made certain parts of downtown a nuisance to live in.

There are definitely more families headed to the general area and I'm sure the amenities are growing but one family I know well that lives in fidi goes to Tribeca every weekend for playgrounds, shopping and classes. I don't consider that too much of a nuisance though.

The Financial District is family friendly and has welcomed a lot of new restaurants and things to do in the neighborhood. Check out www.fidifamilies.com.
