Discussion about
If a townhouse isn't landmarked but doesn't currently have a driveway or garage, what is the process by which to get a driveway and be able to put in a garage? Is it very hard to get approved? This would be in Manhattan.
Yes, it's tough to get it approved. There is or was going to be a requirement that the lot had to be a minimum of 40' wide, but don't know whether that went through.
Here's an overview from the Department of Buildings: http://home2.nyc.gov/html/dob/downloads/pdf/tool_kit_curb_cuts.pdf

Hinges on the meaning of the word "development"
The townhouse next door to my building in Harlem has a 1 car garage and they are constantly dealing with parked cars blocking the driveway.

I have a friend who has this problem.
It's a regular part of his day now, at least an hour before he wants to leave, to call the police to have the car towed. Amazing how quickly they respond, though.
I thought I read that curb cuts are no longer permitted if they don't already exist.
Ok guess basically it's impossible to build a curb cut for a driveway of a townhouse? Is that the conclusion. That's what the article suggests.
Pretty much. The rules are very clear. Not that it's never happened, even with the rules in place, but you can't count on it.
When I become Mayor, I'm changing the law. Fuck it. People need garages more than they need those silly quasi-basement level living spaces, and they're sick and tired of handing their keys over to illegal aliens at high-priced parking garages who ding and scrape up their cars (if they're not out and out taking joyrides or running illegal car rentals with them).
Matt, I hear a parking attendant union is in the works. Maybe that'll change your tune. Voluntarily. Or they'll have to borrow the big rat from your union and use it on you.
That's interesting, they never ding up my car. Probably has something to do with one or more of the following:
- I am courteous, respectful, and friendly with them
- I do not assume they are illegal aliens because of the color of their skin, their accent, or their name
- I do not accuse them of using my car illegally
- I am not an asshole who insultingly tells them not to ding up my "nice" car, realizing human dignity is more important than stuff
- I do not look down upon them because they don't live the fabulous life of a middle-aged board member in a 1BR coop in Washington Heights
- I tip them every time I get and drop off my car
Well, inonada, it's nice to see that you've been properly indoctrinated and pussywhipped.
What inonada said.
In 3years at my gv garage our car never got a scratch either. Guys are unfailingly nice. I don't tip at all during the year. I do tip well at holidays. Matt, enjoy the body shop. I'm sure it is very satisfying paying them multiples of what a regular person tips the garage staff over a year.

I doubt Matt actually owns a car. He just wanted to be able to complain about non-union labor.

Kyle, you should start a new thread on tipping.
Don't be too nice, though, or you'll find skin magazines under your seat when you adjust it.
