Those with cars in NYC, I am curious to your tipping - both throughout the year and at the year end. We live in Manhattan, only drive on weekends and always tip $2 in and $2 out. Additionally, we give each of the 4 garage workers $50 at holidays. Is this normal? Am just curious what others are doing. TIA!
$50 at holiday is sufficient without giving tips every single time you come and go. That's excessive. The manager gets more at the holiday and the assistant manager gets something in-between. You might tip the late night guy less, but I just keep it all even. Turns out to be about a month's rent that I dole out in tips. More than if I were to go through the hassle of tipping every time I came or went during the year. Staff seems very happy with me. Maybe I gave them $60/ea. this last year--don't recall. But they smile and literally RUN for my car when they see me. I am very pleased with our tipping/service arrangement.
The regular and holiday tipping definitely help with getting the best care and service. Being friendly also helps...some other patrons are completely rude. They don't look to be monthlies though.
kylewest, you may be cheaper than NYCMatt on garage tipping.
