Discussion about
So things are slow in the NY RE market so there is no better topic of conversation than yourselves (from a lurker, occasional poster). Who has the best, most consistent contributions to SE and why? MVP? --------------------------------------------------------------------- My personal favorite is financeguy. Not the most consistent and it is pretty clear when he (guy) wishes to engage but it is always as rational, concise and considered argument/POV.
kylewest. love. he's my fav.
To me, Financialguy and Inonada bring both a certain logic from an economic perspective to the uneducated investor and managers of their own finances and Keith W81ST give Real estate brokers a nicer image. W67th, is still making me smile, and can be , like Meredith Withney , easy to pick on by unpatient naysayers..Don't worry W67th! Your time will soon prove everyone to be right!
I'll go with w67st. While many people bring a great deal of knowledge to the site, w67th is hilarious. I've burst out loud laughing many a time reading his ridiculously brilliant humor.
w67.
All the wests: w67, kylewest, west81st.
I can agree that some could view financeguy as rational,... but concise?
I vote for squid.
huntersburg
spunky
West81st. I love his open house write ups. Wish they still came as often as they used to, but I'll take what I can get.
W81 - always great content...and a good read.
caonima
For honest and thoughtful information, well written and to the point: kylewest.
For a good laugh: falco
A broker who dispels all the horrible stereotyes and offers sound advice: Keith B
For pure bombast: NYCMatt
I also think that the posts by urban digs and front porch are always specific, on point, and well thought through....
NYRENewbie, thanks for the shout out.
I say Ali ("Frontporch") and Primer deserve mention for their unfailingly constructive, responsive, informative, practical posts; and for their refusal to get baited into the nonsense that most threads seem to devolve into.
Dubya67...who does wrong the right way.
ANd through the muck and mire his arguments are quite sound though I bet against the $500 per sq ft coz A) I think $700 is the new $500 and the lowest possible hard deck unless we end up in a true depression. B)NYC attracts too much worldly chronic bubble fuel.
Agree with Sledgy on Nada and Financeguy.I could certainly see Fguy giving a course or lecture. And even when I read some disputes where I might occasionally find myself on the other side of the argument, those debating them don't step up to the plate with research and/or facts.
Y'all know I like my backup data.
Kylewest, though occasionally we see a bit of the inner diva lash out, so consistently do we read well thought out and even better written responses to topics across the board.
swe and urbandigs
inonada, who, as it turns out, knows mucho
somewhereelse, logic and explanation has never failed me. He has a wealth of knowledge and can direct you to many of resources.
bjw2103 if you like liars.
Tangent: best former poster = 30yrs_RE. Miss that guy
Def miss 30yrs and early day SkinnyAndSweet (real laugh out lowd shite)
sidelinesitter.
Although I know that I'm better than him.
apt23 said so.
I forgot to put notadmnin at Financeguy and inonada's level of quality in his shared opinions.
Inonada even though he is wrong sometimes. Urban digs is almost not a fair comparison.
W81, nyc10023, kylewst, and 30yrs...be he got fed up with the idiocy.
West81st without a doubt. also the former 30yrs.
I like mimi, so cute and squeezable.
I missed Carolst.
She was my favorite.
I second walterh7 - with W81,nyc10023,kylewest and 30yrs. They are (or were, alas 30yrs) always on topic and informative. No ranting and/or raving

No votes for Mr. Chicago? Wasn't his name Rufus?
Socialist. I always agree with him (her?)
prettymama
got to like the handle
Most helpful market advice: frontporch and urbandigs (I'd include West81st, but I'm not very interested in UWS open houses, however floral the prose)
Most helpful renovation: Primer, kylewest
Best Contrarian: NYCMatt / Alanhart (may he rest in peace)
Most Missed (besides Alanhart): Spunky
Most Confounding: Julia (where is she?)
Most Amusing: the revelation that Chicago / Rufus was a Columbia Business School reject
Most Ignored: West67th
Matt and Alan in a category together?
I must profess my love for kylewest & frontporch. I also miss aboutready; I only wish she had resisted responding to the troublemakers.
Personally, I miss Stevejhx and Alanhart. For real.
Yes, Urbandigs is a must read. I do miss Alanhart, he was very clever with words.
right 30yrs...what happened to him? Met the guy a few times at SE get-togethers back in the day when markets were volatile and fun to talk about. he is one interesting fella
I would choose Kylewest.
He knows more then most of the contractors I know. I still wish I could hire him
30years is embroiled in litigation.
He asked me to help him by telling him if the attny. for my condo, who made a mess trying to sue me; was the same as his adversary.
I went off the board and called him, gave him some helpful info.
But nobody can "run" anyone else off the se boards.
kylewest is the mvp.
His writing is on par with the pros that get paid for RE writing.
Primer wants to hire him, in order to add to the fine employees he has.
Who wouldn't?
He's not perfect but he's sincere and he knows his stuff.
I biked by what I believe to be his house in East Hampton.
Very nice.
Definitely 30yrs and kylewest
New2RE: you must have been reading but not posting , long before you logged on here.
How have things been going for you?
drdrd: Get real.
No offense.
Re: aboutready.
kylewest, has a nice temperament
huntersburg is sharp.
Truth feels like a personal friend.
with friends like that....
Digs, Kyle, w67, 30yrs, Ali until she kept dropping the H bomb. Matt gets honorable mention cuz he's just so unapologetically and endearingly clueless.
Almost always worth reading and genuinely helpful: kylewest, West81st, nyc10023, inonada, tenemental, JuiceMan, 30yrs, sidelinesitter, spinnaker1, urbandigs, truthskr10, frontporch, Primer05, GraffitiGrammarian
Occasionally posts good stuff but capable of getting sucked into the drivel/dreck: columbiacounty, malraux, swe, alanhart, aboutready (I count myself in this group of course!)
Entirely overrated but sometimes funny and only helpful about once a month: west67th
Utterly useless and only here to try to get a rise out of others on the internets: petrfitz, huntersburg, mutombonyc, Wbottom
Sorry if I missed anyone.
Inonada,W67, Kylewest, W81ST, nyc10023, NWT, West 34th, financeguy Columbia County. Urbandigs, Primer05 and I really miss 30yrs, AR and Alanhart. And of course Agent Rachael
bjw2103, no one even mentioned you. But your nemeses, be that somewhereelse, mutumbo, Wbuttocks, petrfitz, and even me - huntersburg, have been.
Is that because you are an owner who doesn't know the difference between principal and interest? And never have had anything insightful to say? Ever. Not once.
What is it like to be even more useless and less knowledgeable than bjw2103?
(my question is rhetorical, there's no one to actually answer it)
Alanhart was the biggest trollbag douche on the internet
Under what posting name were you attacked by Alanhart?
hburg, unlike you, I don't measure my worth based on SE mentions. Plenty of people around here have said rather nice things about me. A few have said some not-so-nice things. The only person around here who seems to value anything coming out of your keyboard is 'tumbo. Now that's impressive!
huntersburg,
I mentioned bjw2103, but it was for being a liar, LOL!
And proof of his lies, "Occasionally posts good stuff but capable of getting sucked into the drivel/dreck: columbiacounty, malraux, swe, alanhart, aboutready (I count myself in this group of course!)" LMAO!
And, bjw2103, does not know the meaning of drivel and dreck. bjw2103, is worse than a baby, he has no self-control, and it is obvious, he is beyond the age of a potty trainee.
bjw2103,
You have too many female characteristics, you're the same person who said he will spit in my face and says stay classy. While you have one finger pointed at everyone else, you have three pointed at yourself. "I don't measure my worth based on SE mentions." You mentioned yourself based on? Exactly. And, huntersburg may joke a lot, but when he gets serious, he is serious, h'burg has never been caught in lies, unlike yourself. h'burg does not have an agenda, unlike yourself. You're another one with no self-control, lacking self-control is why ar and alanfart are not here now, making racial insensitive remarks. I do give you one thing, you have never made racial insensitive remarks, but beside that your an idiot.
For the record, I'm not the only SE poster who values huntersburg. bjw2103, wish he could be like h'burg.
i second huntersburgh..
..calling w67 "dirty ape" always makes me chuckle and never gets old, plus hunter has some good insights time to time..
hol4,
Please, spell huntersburg name correctly, LOL, joking. LOL.
lawl omfg lawl
NYCMatt if the topic is specifically about doorman tipping.. he's spot on, despite ironically being a union member.
hol4,
good sense of humor! NYCMatt a union member? LOL
30years was the best. I really wish he would come back.

Provide one attributed quotation of a nice thing said about you. It doesn't have to be recent.
- Kylewest is very good about real estate knowledge, village, and decor (his estimates are for full-service high-end reno however).
- Primer gives very good free advice and earns any business from this board with full disclosure.
NWT knows a lot about building finances.
- I will say that w67 used to better a couple of year back but recently mostly talks about how he has a good deal on rent and his bearish views.
- Nada adds value when he is not talking about high-end rentals for condos priced at 1200+ per sq ft.
>- Primer gives very good free advice and earns any business from this board with full disclosure.
Still that manages to upset columbiacounty.
"inonada,W67, Kylewest, W81ST, nyc10023, NWT, West 34th, financeguy Columbia County. Urbandigs, Primer05 and I really miss 30yrs, AR and Alanhart" I totally agree!
Wasn't mimi the one who wanted to buy an SRO and evict all of the low income tenants and convert it to a place she could live during the few months a year when she visits from Florida and South America? Amazing how selfish someone can be.
W23 is best--see 2d poser here. Brilliant.
Oops. " post". Not "poser". Fingers too big for iPad.
Come on, no one misses stevejhx?
West81st and frontporch
But I also enjoy the economics treatises of a few others, though after they start arguing I stop reading.
Thanks all who put me on their lists -- very nice compliments to see while I was out of town. I adore so many of you I admit I checked SE once poolside.
And 30_yrs is still attached to my brokerage, and still answers the tough questions -- if we ever have another party I'll try to drag him out.
ali r.
kylewest doesn't realize that he (and 30 years) basically saved me from making a very bad apartment-buying decision about a year ago. i had just made an offer on a one-bedroom in a six unit coop/brownstone. I'd never owned before--had saved and saved for years-- and the broker kept assuring me that owning in a small coop was sooooo much less expensive (to carry) than in a big building--and that nothing is all that expensive in terms of their upkeep. And, of course, I was so punch-drunk off the moldings and high ceilings that I wanted to believe her. Well. I came to streeteasy to see if there were any discussions about such a purchase...and I found multiple posts from both of these guys about the specific inherent risks and costs of such a purchase. I'd never heard of a sidewalk vault, I had no idea how much facades or boilers costs. And I really hadn't considered what would happen if a single owner defaulted or couldn't afford their maintenance. For someone else, that would have been an acceptable risk. For me, the joy of ownership would have been totally mitigated by the nagging fear that something would go wrong and I'd be writing a check for 1/6th of it. There are some very smart people on this board and I doubt they realize how valuable their advice is to some of us.
I dont recall the poster's handle, but there at least used to be a buyer's side broker that would occassionaly jump into discussions about UWS pre war apartments and his/her expertise on the subject was like Joe Torre's knowledge of baseball. I will have to seach some of the old West 81 threads to try to find the name to give the broker his/her due.
rsm321
rsm321 it is. Thanks columbiacounty
I remember those posts as well. His knowledge was extremely specialized, exactly the type of thing that one would hope to find on a real estate forum, and exactly the reason I say that real estate brokers are good source of information. That does not mean every person who calls him/herself a broker. That does not mean that there aren't those who lie, or just don't know what they're saying. It means that there is a certain type of specialized knowledge a person will only have from having made it their business to know. I'm sorry there isn't more.
my recollection is that rsm321 is a woman.
and the reason i remember is that i too was immediately struck by her clear knowledge of a particular market segment.
My personal mvp is Primer. Some of the best free advice and if you hire him you will get the best.
His employees are the best: skilled and personable.
I found him here on se and now I can relax and trust him for all of my reno needs.
I was convinced that rsm was a man - one of 2 upper RSD specialists.
Even though I am now affiliated with West81st, I still enjoy reading his open house reports, in fact that is what lead me to introduce myself to him.
inonada always gets me thinking.
west67th without a doubt I have laughed out loud reading his comments.
nwt always seems to have the answers. In general there is a great bunch on this forum (with a few exceptions).
Keith Burkhardt
The Burkhardt Group
and thanks for a few shout outs to moi!
(Led) me!
Truth,
Thank you
THANK YOU, Primer.
When I'm on vacation at the pool, I'm sorry to say that I don't adore streeteasy enough to check it out.
The only se person I thought about was dwell, as we toasted him at dinner in Barcelona.
I do adore dwell.
Is it just me or am I the only one who has an image of UrbanDigs as that character from the children's book "Caps for Sale," trying to sell his wares in a LIDS mall location....
If I was SE, I'd be looking at the Caps peddler in my LIDs store, like "R u fking serious?"
:)
and THANK YOU.... all
I strongly second jojo10's recommendation of rsm321. His knowledge of UWS prewar apartments is encyclopedic. A shame he doesn't post more often. He and West81st complement each other.
I always enjoy w67thstreet too. I'm just hoping that The Learning Channel renews Talking Ape: New York for another season. Each time I see an episode, it makes me laugh. Unfortunately, sometimes I leave it on the channel and get stuck watching Sister Wives, Extreme Couponing, and sometimes Cake Boss, but usually I manage to switch back to New York 1 before another episode of the Duggars.
> swe and urbandigs
why thanks guys...
UD definitely at the top of my list, although he doesn't post that much anymore... of course, that's because he's busy doing better things (including his site)...
somewhereelse,
So humble of you :-)
W81, who I still think of as the doyenne of SE even though he's outed himself as a man.
I like the broker who offers the rebate. Money trumps advice.

i'm the best contributor
How is DC treating you?
I admire W81 more than most, and I wish Semerun would post more often.
