Cost to add a bathroom

Discussion about
Looking at a listing with an eye towards eventually adding a second bathroom. It would next to the kitchen, and is currently where the breakfast bar is, so not much would have to be done to the kitchen itself besides trimming the countertop back. So assuming that the co-op board would allow it (apparently it's been done in the past in that line) what is a general ballpark for cost? Would be a stall shower, or maybe even just a half bath. Thanks

how do you know the layout of all units in a line are identical?
verify coop will allow wet over dry.
some buildings have non-negotiable "don't even ask" policies on this. Assuming they will allow wet over dry is a big assumption.

Thanks but that's not my question. Assuming it would be approved (and yes there are identical units that have a second bathroom added - the joys of historical listings on streeteasy!), what are we looking at? 20k? 50k? 80k?

ebabrah,

Very tough to answer. It depends on where the plumbing is. I would budget around 25-40

Our neighbor decided to forgo adding a half-bath because his contractor told him that if you add a bathroom, it must be ADA compliant, which significantly increases the footprint and the cost. Does anyone know if this is true?

Others can likely shed light on this more accurately, but in general, yes, this is true. Our new powder room is large enough to drive a truck through it. Well, more specifically, it's large enough to accommodate the turning radius of your typical wheelchair. That requires an excessively large door and a larger footprint than what you'd typically need for a half bath.
