In new buildings, stuff usually starts failing within the first year.

I think its an interesting question. In new buildings, stuff "starts failing in the first year", but really its construction problems that were never properly built in the first place and the walkthrough didn't raise the issue. These problems are then fixed under the 1 year warranty provided by sponsor, and theoretically brought up to snuff. Then there's a period of things going ok, before they start to fall apart again, which i think gets at op's question.

I guess at the end of the day the question is, how well does concrete slab construction hold up (or whatever most buildings are made of these days)?

What I find interesting is all the new construction loaded with appliances that look good , are expensive, and have horrible repair records. You can start the list off with Viking oven ranges.

Matt is partially correct. High end refrigerators like Sub Zero are superior products when they work keeping food fresh longer, but are more prone to breaking down and more expensive to repair. For reliability Kitchen Aid is cheaper, looks the same breaks down less frequently, but it can't claim having two compressors.

Indeed. People who pay thousands of dollars for ranges where igniters fail and they're so expensive to repair or replace that the owners just use lighters and matches, a la 1920?

Just spend $600 on a Frigidaire or a Hotpoint and be done with it. Four generations of cooks in my family -- dozens of households -- stretching back to the 1930s ... and never ONCE has anyone required servicing of any kind on their range, cooktop, or oven.

Just stick with the basics.

Blame inflation. Even the standard American models break more often than in the past. Companies can't raise prices as much as they'd like so they reduce quality in ways we can't see. Nobody would buy an appliance built to yesterday's standards. Too expensive.

Grandmas appliances didn't come with fancy electronics. That's another reason why they lasted longer, even if they weren't as enjoyable to use when they did work.
