Discussion about
Looking for cheap luxury, high rise, doorman rental buildings, for less than $2,000/month for a studio, near Columbia University (by near I mean within a few subway stops away).
Try looking in 1998.
There is a great building, a co-op at 235 W 102nd st
Is there a criteria that makes something a luxury building? I saw one building that called itself ultra luxury.
666 WEA is a prewar conversion with renovated units done to luxury standards. Nice location at 92nd and West End Avenue is near 1 2 3 express subway, shopping and Columbia University. Ammenities coming by fall. Price is $2,300?for a spacious studio with all-new finishes.
Thanks for your responses. A few comments:
jechoen: I know which building you're talking about. It's a nice building, but the studios--at least the ones currently on the market for rent--are far from luxury.
miwarnock: I think of luxury as follows: doorman, elevator, renovated (stainless steel appliances, etc.), basic amenities (roofdeck, etc.), and so on.
PMG: Unfortunately 2,300 is out of my price range. I'm looking for something for under 2,000.
Matt.....very funny
falcogold ... been a while.
What is "cheap luxury". Cheap is cheap. Thats why its called cheap.
Wow kyle, very snarky
Rough day. But honestly, cheap luxury? That's special. I'll try asking for that next time i stop by Dunhill or Charvet at Bergdorf.
Well, don't put yourself out.
Do people smoke crack on the Upper West Side?
You can find highrise doorman 1 bds at this price in Harlem or WH, even newer buildings with WD in unit but not 1 subway stop away and not in the UWS.
"What is "cheap luxury". Cheap is cheap. Thats why its called cheap."
Living in a brand new doorman high rise with WD in unit in Jersey City or Riverdale etc for 50% less than the same unit would cost in Chelsea or the east 60s.
Looks like Jason's comment about smoking crack didn't pass the censors.
"but worst of all
cheap is cheap..." ("Low Budget", Ray Davies The Kinks )
Now if Kyle wants to sing to lift his spirits, the next line is:
"WHAT DID YOU SAY?"
then: Truth:"LOW BUDGET!"
kyle:"I THOUGHT YOU SAID THAT!!!".
Jump in here, kyle.
There's a nice new highrise next to St. John the Divine on 110th. Can't remember the name but you can probably find it with a search.
Actually it's the song's chorus so huntersburg and jason can sing it with kyle.
What's the deal with stainless steel appliances. Why is this a must have for a studio rental????
I prefer either Harvest Gold or Avocado Green.
If I never see another SS appliance I'll be happy. Yes, sometimes they look quite nice but often they are just there because that's what everybody else has.
Seriously. Dare to be different!

Avocado rules!!!
Ceaser stone in green apple is the next step up for those who love the green
I don't like stainless much. I prefer those retro Fridgidare's in nice colors. Like Rachel Ray has on her set.
Does that mean if you don't have stainless steel appliances guests or your girl friend will be turned off and leave your luxury studio?
In fact, that's the first question I ask before I look at apt. Does it have stainless steel appliances?
