A private elevator means it's yours, only goes to your floor and the lobby (and maybe the basement), and nobody else uses it. A key lock elevator has a keyed switch next to the floor button, and you must insert and turn the correct key, then push the button for the floor you wish to go to. With a keylock elevator, everybody has a key that works the lock next to the floor button for the floor they live on.

Keylocks are a big bore, as you have to send the elevator down to the lobby for guests & deliveries, and then call it up (from the call button on your floor), or go down to the lobby yourself. Keylocks are useful for buildings without doormen, so if somebody gets into the lobby, they can't take the elevator to upper floors.

Thank you. I've also seen something called a direct key elevator. I'm assuming that's similar/the same as a key-locked elevator?
