Discussion about 171 West 71st Street #11C
Let's start with this one. No master bedroom, big strange foyer, dining room far from kitchen. For $1.7m you should get a real bedroom!

But, it does have lots of closets!

nice window going to waste on the foyer and only a small one in the living room. tiny closet in the bedroom but hey, you can always store your clothes next to the kitchen. you are right Freebird, candela would be horrified.

i love a sunny windowed large foyer to drop all your sht in once you walk in..

tear down staff room walls for a big eat in kitchen.. tear down excessive closets leading from kitch to bedroom which becomes living room.. living room becomes master, adding closets if desired...dining room becomes popup office/sexden/library/open walled to living room/etc depending who your guests are for the night...

show me a 3 bedroom railroad apt, now that'd be hell.

Check out this teensy one-bedroom, asking only $3800: http://streeteasy.com/nyc/rental/929971-rental-200-west-67th-street-lincoln-square-new-york

The room dimensions are measured from the glass walls, so even smaller than stated. The effective size of that bedroom is maybe 8'x9'.

As with all new buildings, the problem the architect had was in cramming in however many units of x average square feet, to make the developer's numbers, while still complying with handicapped-access regulations. So the bath and kitchen have to have enough clear space to spin a wheelchair around in, and the square feet had to come from LR, BR and closets.

Freebird: 171 west 71st has had several chopped up apartments over the years. In this case I would imagine the most effective way to take food all the way from kitchen to dining room would be on roller blades.

It wasn't an unusual plan for a pre-WWI Edwardian Five. You'd want the kitchen facing the courtyard and the DR facing the front, so often had to cross a hall to get from DR to kitchen.

Here's the original plan, showing the serving pantry where the W/D and extra closets are now: http://digitalgallery.nypl.org/nypldigital/dgkeysearchdetail.cfm?trg=1&strucID=286898&imageID=464841&total=301&num=20&parent_id=286807&s=&notword=&d=&c=&f=&k=0&sScope=&sLevel=&sLabel=&lword=&lfield=&sort=&imgs=20&pos=35&snum=&e=r

Note how the maid's room is smaller than the new Aire example above.
