Advice on finding properties that need serious work

Although I won't be ready to buy for a while, I'm wondering if anyone has advice for potential buyers who are not afraid of an apartment that needs a lot of work (family in the construction business, experience with renovations, etc). I would prefer to buy a cheaper apartment with potential. Of course, listings are always trying to hide this information. I know that listings with no photos except the front of the building are often a good bet, but does anyone have other advice?
