Discussion about The Vantage at 308 East 38th Street in Murray Hill
We had another rodent today. This has become an almost daily occurance - I think we've had five incidents in the past two weeks. I've read similar stories from tenants on other websites. Please know this if you're thinking about renting in the Montrose - you will be sharing your living space with rats. And you will be paying $4,600+ for a 2-bedroom. I just wish someone had warned me.

Get a shovel and clobber el raton the next time you see one.
That's what building supers do down in the basement.
If the ratons are in your apartment with such regularity, you should get a friend to video-tape you chasing them down and clobbering them.
Upload it to YouTube.
Forward the video to the building's managing agent.
(I would have some raton-clobbering music playing on the stereo while the chase and clobber is going on.
Something catchy with a good beat.)
I'm pretty sure this violates the building's two pet rule.
Honestly this is very simple, you contact the managing agent who hires an exterminator. Rodent's are not good for property values, but if this is an old building and the exterminator is not 100% successful, then buy a cat. Not only might it help with the intruders but you might enjoy the company. Also some dogs work as well.
What has the managing agent been doing to deal with the problem? Is everyone in the building aware of the problem, which they should be as rodents travel throughout buildings. Not everyone wants to allow those little poison pillows to be placed in apartment, but they do work.
On your own, you can try to identify how they're getting into your apartment - even tiny crevices allow access. Then use steel wool to stuff any openings- they can't get through that.
Raton = mouse, not rat. Just sayin'.
Are we talking rats or mice. Lots of these posts say rats when they mean mice.
Squid: Yes, I know that. The rats don't care.
Riversider: Your point goes back to the discussion about the mice at Fairway and the misidentification of them as "rats". There were rats in Fairway, on other videos uploaded to YouTube.
Rats, mice whatever critters the building is infested with, if the managing agent doesn't do anything about
the complaints -- get a shovel and proceed with my suggestion, Mresident.
You can call them Mickey or Ben and Willard -- just clobber them with a shovel to the beat of some good music and you will be a hit on YouTube.
May I suggest a YouTube title? : "ManhattanMontrosemice" or "ManhattanREntalRats".
Truth , Since it's the holiday season how about this....

Mr. Jingles!
That's a great movie with an excellent cast.
Mresident:
If it's really ratones that you've got in your apt., spare one from the shovel and try to teach him a few tricks.
That can be your next YouTube hit.
Adopt a cat from the ASPCA. Problem solved and you provide a home for a cat who needs one.
Is this one of NYCMatt's large inflatable mice out front?
huntersburg: Those guys get dental insurance in their union health insurance plans.
Dear Riversider/ph41/Squid/Bernie123, everyone is now stupider for reading your comments. Is this how you spend your time %u2013 posting unwitty and asinine quips on message boards? I was trying to help potential future tenants by highlighting a serious issue. To answer your (few) legitimate questions %u2013 we%u2019ve had three or four exterminators visit the apartment (including one that we hired ourselves) and they haven%u2019t been able to solve the problem. I think buying a cat, which is likely a 10 year commitment, is an extreme solution to what should be a temporary problem. Ok, you can now go back to your mind-numbing stupidity.
Usually when someone posts a message like you did, Monroseresident, it's not to warn future residents but to get back. I have no idea if that's the case here, but it is the case more times than most. And unfortunately getting a cat is the tried and true solution if an exterminator fails or you don't want to move or can't afford to.

"Dear Riversider/ph41/Squid/Bernie123, everyone is now stupider for reading your comments."
This is a chat board.
People chat.
Sometimes people chat about rats.
Or cats.
Maybe even bats.
I like to chat about rats.
Do you?
columbiacounty likes to chat about cockroaches.
Montroseresident:
You didn't include me in your opinion of those other comment posters.
So you agree that I gave you good advice.
Did you not read my comment?
Your loss if not.
No gain for me, either way.
Montroseresident can't handle Truth.
I don't care if he read it or not.
But if he didn't, he lost out on good advice.
if you don't care--why did you comment?
^^ Oh, the asshole troll c.c. is here.^^
Maybe NYCNovice will come back on se to chat with him.
how do you know? do you not care? why comment?
^^The asshole troll c.c. is here, trolling my every comment^^.
phew, columbiacounty is here to save streeteasy from Truth.
and why are you here?
columbiacounty, here to save us all!
except his mother and his wife, of course.
why?
that's getting very deep into your head
Mice is an issue with 99.9% of all buildings in Manhattan.
Here's a recommendation. Since majority of the rodents come through the gas pipes in back of your stove, you can either remove the gas stove and seal the gas pipe with a wire mesh.
You need to go thru your apt and seal any openings around pipes and holes in walls/floor/ceilings with metal mesh or a spray-on that hardens like cement to prevent future intruders. It is not in the exterminator's interest to do this since you will never need them again. You capture the ones that have already breached your home with rat zapper or snap traps.
keep your place as clean as possible with no food lying around..
don't leave dirty dishes in the sink/dishwasher overnight etc.don't have an overflowing/uncapped trashbin. The rodents aren't stupid either, they'll learn fast if there is nothing to eat to go to your neighbors instead.
Cat/Predatory dog works wonders too, they will naturally stay away.
Prior to me moving into my current apartment, they had a rodent problem, but i did plug up some holes, did some renovation(heard they don't like the smell of polyurethane) and keep the place free of any food lying around and i haven't seen since.
I did also have a Shiba Inu dog which is highly predatory..so that might have scared them off too.

Hear that columbiacounty? Put the lid on your peanut butter.
I had 7 mouses and I fixed the problem easy...
"don't leave dirty dishes in the sink/dishwasher overnight etc."
Most people don't realize this, but regardless of how scrupulously clean you might be, dishwashers are a major attraction for rodents and cockroaches. The reason: there's always bits of wet food stuck in traps, filters, and hoses. You might as well be ringing a dinner bell for them.

That. Its a complete myth (per NYC's 311 service no less) that making your house spotless will stop them. You could have daily maid service and it won't be enough. The only full proof way is to have a contractor who specializes in this put steel wool and glue or similar in EVERY conceivable hole big enough for a mice to slip through. That plus a good exterminator will kill the ones hidden outside the holes (and in your actual apt) and keep new ones from coming in.
A cat or rat terrier HELPS, but won't stop them completely, since they pet needs to sleep (often in your room).
But unless that contractor HERMETICALLY SEALS OFF your entire apartment, that dishwasher will still attract cockroaches, which can flatten their bodies and squeeze through cracks as thin as the thickness of a few sheets of paper.
I agree with Matt about the dishwasher problem.
Although I've always installed a new dishwasher in my apartments when I purchase, I never use it. Ever.
I haven't used the new dishwasher in my rental apt. either.
I don't like whirlpool/Jacuzzi bathtubs either.
Matt, I was addressing rodents only.
I hope the rodents appreciated your address, jason.
If Monty gets rid of the rodents yet discovers that there are roaches, we will be getting daily updates.

actually buying a cat is a very reasonable response to an ongoing issue of potentially having vermin in nyc. think it through.

Did you have any flooding problems from the hurricane?
Thinking about buying in this builidng, is the mice/rat issue still there??
Can anyone who is the current resident or previous residents share some insight?
Thanks.
