somaloft,

I would meet several contractors, try to make sure they are bidding on the same scope of work as well as the same expectations you have.

I have not heard of anything good or bad about home depot services, my gut tells me that they probably are not the best but i could be wrong.

The floor plan look familiar, west 23rd? I am a contractor and would be happy to take a look at your project if you would like

Here's a recent thread on renovation where cost is discussed:

Home Depot services: my experience with them was mixed, likewise what I have heard about them. I met with several designers and contractors before my kitchen reno and the HD KD seemed by far to have the least design know-how. I would not waste my time with them again without a specific referral.

I am assuming you have never done a renovation before... in that case, I would say do not expect to jump into a renovation. Start speaking with GCs and designers to get a sense of feasibility and cost of the things you want to do. Some of the things you mentioned are fairly complex and perhaps from your POV, cost-prohibitively so. Once you speak with professionals, you may change your mind (or not) as to what you want to accomplish.
