Discussion about
We rent on 112th street. We have finally caught a mouse that was leaving droppings all over. Neighbors below us say that they are recently catching mice. Is seems the whole building has a problem. The management company- Janus Property hasn't done anything (though the Super has been helpful in setting up traps). Is there anything more proactive that can be done to get rid of the mice?

Nothing is better than a mouser cat. No kidding. I hired Arrow exterminating, didn't work so well, the cat works perfectly. Just the smell of the mouser cat keeps mice away.

Cats are wonderful pets and loving companions. They are also excellent mouse catchers and mouse deterrents. However, to stick a cat in a basement and leave it to hunt mice without food or human companionship (a cat wants a lap to sit in or at least its own human to sit along side) is not humane. Get a cat by all means but make it be someone's pet or pets and the mouse problem will take care of itself. Any cat will catch mice--even a spoiled brat like my feline (who became a mouser when construction next door inundated our first floor apartment with not very bright mice.

try to look for open spots in the walls/floors. they are typically around pipes. purchase spray foam bottle for $5 at home depot and go to town on those holes.

cat is the best solution. ours was a master of catching them and presenting them to us.... yuk

100% agree on the recommendation close any gaps. This will help with insects as well.

Use steel wool wherever it fits (shove it in with a screwdriver) and shoot expanding foam in as well.

Remember that mice can flatten out to practically nothing so be aggressive. Buy a caulking gun if you don't already own one and use that too. Anywhere there's a gap, close it. Check around radiator pipes where they go through the floor, water pipes were they go through the wall, and around windows and doors. Look at the backs of closets along the baseboard. Check behind the refrigerator and the stove.

If you see greasy-looking spots or residue, that's where the mouse is entering.

A lot of work but it pays off. I haven't seen so much as an ant in years.

before you spray foam opening around pipes, in walls (especially in any hvac units) - stuff the opening with steel wool.

Ask the building to hire an exterminator. Exterminators can plug holes in your unit. For example in the fuse box, or other hidden areas where mice have been known to hide. Send the management company a written letter (have it certified) or email the building informing them of a mouse infestation.

Sorry Kharby. When some people say "mouser" they are referring to a cat solely for that purpose and I wanted people to be clear that is not a good solution. Sounds like you have a lucky, loved feline who also works mouse patrol. And that's a great place for a cat to sleep, double the warmth and double the chance of a sleepy petting session.

"a sleepy petting session"

I knew it! I KNEW it! Make marriage legal for homosexualists and The Gays and Lesbionics, and sure enough people start trying to normalize this sort of behavior.

Hell in a hand basket.
