Discussion about
Retailers are getting desperate..... When customers bring their stimulus checks to a Sears or Kmart cash register, they can convert the amount of the check into gift cards, plus receive a bonus gift card worth an additional 10%. To be eligible, the amount of gift cards purchased must be equal to the full value of the stimulus check. The gift cards can be redeemed at any Sears, Kmart or Lands' End retail stores or online at sears.com or landsend.com. The promotion is scheduled to last from May 14 to July 19.

Desperate? That's BRILLIANT - for the retailer; all of the stimulus money gets spent at their store. Look for it next at WalMart. Anybody need a ride to Queens?

As a society that is basically based on consumerism and debt it is no surprise that the government is giving these things out.

Sears might be giving bonus discounts on these but I wouldn't expect too many places locally doing it. The tourists were definitely out en masse last weekend with their Euros.

Now I know why so many people on this site are bearish about NY apartment prices; if you're getting a check then you also need a major correction to by your first home. Best of luck.

stevejhx and nba: My understanding was that anyone who filed taxes this year would be get a check. My retired father, who doesn't even need to file, got a 1040A form in the mail that basically said "fill out your name and address, sign the back, mail it in and you'll receive a check."

I don't know the cutoff figure, but my extension yesterday said I was ineligible. There's like a box or something.

If your AGI exceeds $75K (single) or $150K (married) then you get nothing except a notification saying that you are not elgible!

I love this gov't. Giving the money to the majority of people who are already in debt thousands of dollars and asking them to spend it is like telling the alcoholic one drink won't hurt. I just want to know when I agreed to support those who spent like they were going to die the next day. Please don't get me started. This is one of the biggest insults I have ever seen. The Banks get bailed out, Home builders get huge tax breaks and the "poor" get free money. And what do the people that pay the most takes get? The opportunity to work harder and pay even more taxes.

if they didnt give the stimulus checks out, the recession would last 3-4+ quarters.

THAT JUST CANT BE ALLOWED TO HAPPEN!

We must limit the recession to 2-3 quarters MAX! Hence, the govt gives back money to its people to spend. This bill is solely for the purpose of getting Americans to spend what they probably otherwise wouldnt.

If I got a check I would by Bear Stearns. Not the stock. The firm.
