Discussion about
Thinking about making a move to Williamsburg. Is the J/M/Z stop at Marcy/Broadway generally safe?

Day After Opening, McCarren Park Pool Lifeguards Attacked

Early AM shooting in McCarren Park!
A guy on a bike starts shooting randomly. Plus all the other illegal stuff from Greenpoint and Williamsburg's 94th Precinct.

No, the Hipsters will come get you, mess your hair up, and make you take an ax-making class.

Have you tried Otha's coffee! It's great! And there really is an Otha.

We rent a (artist's) studio near there, but right now it's mostly for storage as we're moving this week.

Check out the kosher pastries down the block from there.

Oh, and visit the police precinct and get the low down. Just ask whoever is on duty.

Of course it's safe. Are you sure you're suited to city life?

It's a helluva lot safer than Hamilton Heights or Washington Heights, but still you should lock your car doors as soon as you get in. Don't stop at stop signs at night, neither. And let your neighbors know anything about you.

Vigilance!

The JMZ stop there is generally safe, but it is slightly dodgy which you feel later at night.

Ottawanyc - Could you expand on the dodgy feeling of that JMZ stop? That's the main concern.

Williamsburg in general is divided into areas, some of which are considerably nicer (gentrified). That stop is sort of right in the middle and is sort of scuzzy and has lots of people loitering about. I don't want to overstate this though. It is generally fine, but if you were solo you would not feel comfortable showing up by yourself at 2am. If you are having doubts just go there around 10 any night and you can get the sense. Again though, 97% of time this stop would be fine.

Agree with Ottawanyc, it all depends on where you are in WB. There's some areas where you are simply begging to get yourself into trouble.

If you will be safe 97% of the time, 29 out of 30 days a month, what's the big deal everyone is worrying about?

Wouldn't 97% be more than 29 days of the month?

There are constant reports of residents of the Gretsch building suffering horrible fates (those that dare to go out that is). Please.
