More New York City subway stations getting wireless access Updated at 06:15 PM today http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=resources/traffic&id=9078542 NEW YORK (WABC) -- Cell phone service and free Wi-Fi have arrived at another 30 New York City subway stations. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced the expansion Thursday of a program that started with six stations in 2011. Busy Manhattan stations including Times Square, Columbus Circle and Rockefeller Center are now wired. Officials say all the system's underground stations will be wired in the next four years. While cell phones may be used in the stations, there are no plans for service on the moving trains. The cost of the project is an estimated $200 million, covered by the carriers. Anyone using subway stations between 18th Street and 96th Street on the Manhattan's West Side should be able to go online or have a conversation on their Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile or Transit Wireless phones. It's all part of the completion of the grand plan to provide wireless service to entire subway system by 2016. The first six connected stations went online in 2011. Now we have to listen to endless stupid chatter underground too!
OK, there is an important safety element. Let us hope the chatterboxes
show restrain.
