Question to fellow decibel haters: can you recommend a freestanding refrigerator that at least is rumored to be quiet (under 46 db)? Thanks to all well-informed.

Natural-gas refrigerators used to be quieter than electric. Check them out.

Consumer reports does rate refrigerators on noise, though their testing does not specify DB.
