Painting kitchen cabinets

I have custom kitchen cabinets with pullout drawers that are dark wood and I would like white cabinets. Can my dark wood be painted or lacquered? Is there paint that I can use that will be non-toxic such that it can be done while we are there (I have a young child)? Do the cabinets look good when done? Can lacquering the cabinets be done in the apartment with the cabinets in place?

We are finishing a project on Friday and did exactly what you are talking about. We sprayed all the cabinets but there was nobody living there at the time so it wasnt that bad

You are a contractor or a home owner? How much ballpark should it cost (i have biggish kitchen for manhattan with about 10 small drawers and 25 single door cabinets? If I want to change the backsplash and counters should I do that first?
