Combined Incomes Allowed

My father and I want to share an apartment (he lives there during the week and I live there on weekends), but because we would only qualify for the "40x the monthly rent requirement" if we combine our incomes, will a landlord allow us to combine our incomes and co-sign? Also, how is this any different than a simple married couple co-signing a lease? Surely a landlord would never disallow a married couple to co-sign, right?
