Discussion about
planning in doing a gut renovation on a 1200sf 2br apt in post war building. i will have an architect. im guessing job will take 7/8 months. when does interior decorator need to get involved in project? What is typical/fair fee structure? what should i expect to pay?
What do you need the decorator to do? Are you looking for someone to design elements such as built-ins, kitchen/bathroom and the like or do you only need someone to furnish the place? There's a big difference between full design services and furnishing/decorating only.
im hoping architect will be doing built-ins/kitchen/bathroom etc, so i am thinking mostly furnishing, color schemes, additional accents needed to complete the project
If you're doing any recessed lighting or special lighting for the kitchen,or will need outlets in specific places for lamps, etc. it really helps to know furniture placement in advance (more the decorator's purview than the architect's).
so what kind of costs/fees am i looking at?
Any "off the top of the head" guesstimate would not be close to realistic. If you are interested in getting a realistic price, feel free to email me at prema@azarchdesign.com to discuss the particulars of the project and see if there is a basis for us to go further.
Hi, BMF
It's hard to say what the cost would be for the design job. Depends on the scope of work and the square footage of space. Typically a decorator/designer will be involved in the beginning of the project so that she/he has an idea of furniture placement, choosing paint colors for walls, built-ins etc. to ensure that it flows from one space to the other. The decorator will also spec tiles, carpets, lighting etc. if needs be. If you are interest in getting a pricing, we can set up a time to meet and go over your needs.

you are looking at 30% on top of all expenses...hopefully some of these expenses will come with a trade discount. Many decorators also charge something similiar to a retainer fee - this varies based on the designer's pedigree and scope of the project.
Good decorators are worth their weight in gold, bad ones will put you in the looney bin (that is, if you could still afford it)....choose carefully...
