Discussion about
years ago tiles were laid over a beautiful hard wood floor in my apartment. Is there anyway to rescue the floor and restore it to its former glory?

it depends what they put on top of the floors before placing tiles on top. if plywood, without glue, then most likely. if glue was applied, forget it.

I don't think glue is the issue. Floor sanding can work magic for imperfections on top of the floor and will eliminate all that gunk. Even if plywood they would have screwed the plywood down on the hardwood. Even if you pull up the plywood you will have screw holes in the underlying floor after you sand. I think the hardwood is toast but you should take up some tile to see its condition. You may find the imperfections charming too depending on your sense of decor.

If the tiles were installed with thin set I highly doubt that you can save the floors

Also depends on the condition of the floor underneath. If it's very thin then it's unlikely.
