Discussion about
I am looking to rent a 1 bedroom apt downtown. I saw one I like for 3500/month. There is another apt in same building with same layout but has a washer/Dryer and they are asking 200 more per month. Is it worth the premium than deal with the hassle of going in the basement or sending it out? Is $200 extra per month a fair additional charge for a Washer/Dryer? My girlfriend really would like it but I'm not sure if this is a bit overpriced. I did try negotiating but LL but budge on price.
I think the w/d would be worth an extra $1000/month.
Houser, For 200 you can have a cleaning lady come twice a month and do your laundry in the basement in addition to cleaning. Just buy enough undergarments to last you two weeks. If you had kids and were going to do a load every 2 days, it is a different story.
$3,500/month is too much for a 1 bedroom.

$1000 if in Tribeca. Lower if in Jackson Heights.
"For 200 you can have a cleaning lady come twice a month and do your laundry in the basement in addition to cleaning"
If you can find a cleaning lady you can trust, which is a tall order in this city.
I have to agree with Matt plus how many times a week is a cleaning lady coming to my apt to the laundry. Can I get a cleaning lady for 50 bucks a week?
meant "to do the laundry."
And cleaning ladies notoriously suck at doing laundry. I know, since I'm down in the laundry room with these women. No pre-treating stains, no separating the colors from the whites, everything on "hot" water and the hottest setting on the dryer. And they drop your clothes and linens all the time on filthy floor. It really is like that commercial, "you're not as clean as you think you are".
"And cleaning ladies notoriously suck at doing laundry."
+1
If you look around NYBits or SE, you will see a $200 premium is about right. Maybe more than $200. Lots of bldgs have some with others without. You can easily compare.
Houser, How many times per month do you really need to do laundry? Just buy extra set of everything. I have a washer dryer in the apt and cleaning lady cleans once every two weeks including laundry. Work cloths go to the cleaners.
If you pay cleaning lady well -$85 including tip for 1 bed with laundry and organization is a good price to find someone competent in manhattan. They will separate your dark and whites. This is what we used to do in our previous apt.
300, you had to bring race and segregation into this.
Thanks 300 that makes sense to me but my girlfriend is a little on the OCD side when it comes to laundry. She likes to do her own laundry so I may opt on paying the extra couple of hundred to have the washer and dryer even though I feel it's a bit steep to have this extra convenience.
Be sure it's a good front-loading washer. Landlord-grade washing machine equals shit, and you'll use it in constant frustration.
So you are saying that Landlords don't front load?
What's $200 in today's market. Take the one with the W/D.
Good luck houser.
Isn't it odd how sometimes people post answers to a thread on one that is not related?
I f'ng hate doing the wash. I pray that the machines will break, and then I can send it to random people.
AR, you deserve the best.
greensdale: Yet another thing that she "f'ng hate(s)":
"doing the wash."
She can't just "send it to random people" without "pray(ing) that the machines will break,..."
In NYC where "the weather sucks" and she "can't wait to fucking leave".
However, she can't learn new skills and will never pass a road test.
She can't drive, so her options for "retirement" living are limited.
Even doing her laundry is too much for her to handle.
What exciting excerpts from the new aboutready biography by fangirl trUth, coming soon to a bookstore near you!
trUth has spent years shadowing her idol, aboutready, in preparation for the tell-all exposé.
Maybe I'll be able to appear on Ellen. Or, with my family, more likely Jerry Springer. With truth it often IS all about us.
trollalanhart and aboutready: two alkies who think that it's always about them.
That's how it is with alkies. They believe that they are "idols" being "shadowed".
