Discussion about
Looking at a low floor apartment on W 79th St. Any information on the level of noise on that street given the bus and street fair. I'm not so concerned about noise during the day as I am with morning and late evening noise that interferes with sleep. Thanks!
go there and stand in front at the times you would be there? Each area is different. Idling trucks or busses can be a disaster for such things
79th street is a major intersection considering the West Side Highway and the east west traffic , as Guywithcat wrote traffic varies based on time of day ,week , events and the occasional accident or city event. It is a major bus thorough faire as well.
I lived on a low floor apartment on 79 for a number of years. The traffic noise was generally unbearable. You cannot have open windows when you're home.
If you must live on W79th....look for a rear facing apartment. You'll have less light (not that you would have had that much on a low floor anyway), but you'll avoid a percentage of the noise. It's a difficult street.
If you have good windows, noise may not be a problem, but you'll benefit from the additional light from the wider street. It also will depend where on W 79th you are.
South side is very quiet as M79 runs east on the north side of 79 and west on 81. South side is VERY quiet.
Also, W79 terminates at Columbus - that's not the way you want to head east.
West 79 between Columbus and Amsterdam is fine, further West can be loud. You can also think of it this way - the wealthiest man in NY lives on a busy stretch of East 79th (bus in both directions). He could live anywhere he'd like, including Gracie Mansion...
"South side is very quiet as M79 runs east on the north side of 79 and west on 81. South side is VERY quiet." ... good point, but backwards.
