Discussion about
is there any way to avoid having your broker have access to info like your ssn when preparing a coop package? ive blacked out all info on the documents i need to submit (w2s, tax forms, statements, etc) but the application itself requires it. am i being paranoid?

Depends - what is your ssn?

They are going to run a credit check on you so they are going to have the ssn number anyway. I wouldn't worry about it. You either accept the fact that the coop purchasing process is invasive and compromises privacy, or you don't buy a coop. But really, drawing the line at the ssn is like swallowing the elephant and then straining at the gnat.

Yes, many of us can relate to that.

I'd be less worried about the broker and more worried about the seven or so copies that random strangers (the board) will have access to, and may or may not bother to shred...

Didn't you have to give your broker your ssn number so he could prepare the deal sheet to send to the lawyer.

These days the buyers attorney will send the ss#'s directly to the sellers attorney.

Thanks Keith, but the ssn goes on the contract. Sooner or later they will be viewed by all interested parties.

@Streetsmart, you would think that is true but many attorneys leave them out.

Relax - your DNA is on the paperwork anyway - unless you thought of that as well - & wore gloves while completing the application.

In any event, I've heard the Paranoia Plaza Apartments is an absolutely beautiful building - the 1st of it's kind, in fact, to use SSI #s in lieu of apartment #s, prominently posted on each mailbox & apartment door. Moreover, each unit's waste line is individually marked, so any blockages caused by foods or other items on the restricted list in the house rules can easily be traced. I know you're just gonna love it there! Good Luck!!!
