Discussion about
PTAC units in my condo are very loud when the compressor kicks in. I've been told this is normnal for this brand: "Treasure Island" (or something to that affect). At any rate, can anyone recommend a quiet yet reliable PTAC unit? I hear Friedrich are good, but am not sure. Thank you!
here is a website with ptac review: http://www.hvac-for-beginners.com/packaged-terminal-air-conditioner-ratings.html
mine is islandaire
Thank you, Steven. It turns out I have Islandaire as well. They are painfully noisy! When the compressor goes on, I have to really turn up the volume on my TV in the living room.
... i have not moved in my place yet. i looked around; looks GE is not bad.
I've yet to hear a quiet one and I've noticed that when the AC is on, some of the units get hot enough to fry an egg on.

Thanks all. My reasearch is leading me to GE Quietzone. However, I'd like to see a unit in person before I pull the tirgger.
I don't have PTAC units but was speaking with a sales guy from Arista one time -- he mentioned they take off-the-shelf PTAC units, beef up the insulation and the motor, and then install them. Presumably the improvements help with noise and durability. Might want to give them a call if you're interested.
Amana seems to dominate the market. Made in the USA! They offer the best bang for your buck. You can spend a lot more on a GE, but the literature doesn't show they're any quieter: http://www.h-mac.com/amana-ptac-units.html
