nybits has a list of pet friendly bldgs.
The reason landlords prefer no pets, is because other people may have allergies, their hair gets into radiators and washer/dryers, as well as the dryer vents and is hard to clean. They also can pee or poop on the floors and bring fleas and other types of bugs into the building.
