Discussion about
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/12/nyregion/behind-citys-painful-din-culprits-high-and-low.html?hp Silence has become a luxury in New York that only a scant few can truly afford, and cultural, technological and economic changes in recent years have added to the din everyone else must endure, creating not just one culprit, but many.

One of the comments to the article mentioned the obscenely loud fire truck sirens.

True, they are downright painful to those of us standing on the sidewalks. But the problem is that with today's well-insulated (and air conditioned) cars ... with the windows up ... and the stereo not even blasting ... we need those fire trucks to be that loud. Especially since they blatantly and dangerously ignore red lights, blasting through intersections without even slowing down in case someone happens to be passing through.

The key problem is the driver culture in NY regarding fire trucks and ambulances ... zero attempt to pull over and stop, potentially endangering lives.

They need to ticket via video cameras mounted on emergency vehicles. Same, of course, for bus lanes.
