Hi all, I'm new here and am looking for advice on where to live. I am taking a new job in Great Neck but I do not want to live "on the Island." Hi all, I'm new here and am looking for advice on where to live. I am taking a new job in Great Neck but I do not want to live "on the Island." I am moving to the area from upstate (where living is CHEAP) and so want to avoid ticket shock. I am making decent money but really want to keep my expenses low for now during the transition. I love Brookyln but don't want a nightmare commute and I know the the Great Neck leg of LIRR does not hit Brooklyn. I would absolutely prefer to live in Brooklyn if possible, Park Slope, Cobble Hill, Dumbo (just a few cool areas I can think of that I know I like), but if I can't live in Brooklyn, I'd like to live in an area that has some similar qualities if possible. I've heard Bayside is decent. I don't want a quiet suburb, I obviously don't want a bad area. I'd love to be able to ditch my car, though not sure that is realistic. I'm looking for any realistic input that can help. Thanks! [less]
Bayside does have a nice stretch with retail, bars & restaurants on Bell Blvd. but outside of that it is very suburban. You would probably need a car there. For easy LIRR commute to Great Neck, I would say that you want to look at somewhere that it is easy to get to Penn Station from; alternatively. If you don't want Manhattan, maybe look at something in Queens along the 7 line, like Long Island City; you could take the 7 to Woodside and then take the LIRR to GN from there. You might want to take note that the express trains do not stop at Woodside, but if you're reverse commuting this won't be an issue.
