rental versus mortgage

Why would somebody pay a couple thousands dollars in rent for years when you can own and build your credit at the same time by buying and paying mortgage? I met people renting for twenty or more years and at the end they have nothing to show it for all the money spent. Once you know you will be somewhere for at least five years, renting makes no sense. Or even less than five years. It's wasting money.
