I've used a couple on the UWS. One was awful, charged me half the fee but never completed the work due to incompetence. The other one I used was Academy (http://academymailbox.com). They actually got the job done, but their rates are extremely high. After a bad experience w/ the first company, I just wanted the job done at any cost. In my limited experience, I found that the folks who work in your building the most are likely the best candidate, which is why they can get away charging crazy rates and fees as it's more or less a captive market.

Webster Locksmiths up in the Bronx has been modestly competent so far, which is more than I can say for anybody else I've used.

Academy was the one that fixed ours in the coop that I lived in years ago. By the time they fixed it, the intercom was better than new. We could actually hear loud and clear who was at the door. Once it was fixed, it stayed fixed. Whatever they charged, as I don't even remember it was good to use someone who had the experiance. Anyone can claim to fix it, but that doesn't mean that they really know how.
