Discussion about
Hi, I'm thinking about opening a store downtown manhattan but I have no clue where to find information about rents/prices, permits, paperwork, etc. Any idea where to find the info so I can start studying whether that idea makes sense ? A streeteasy lookalike maybe ?
wait till the Mayoral election is finished.
try loopnet and craigslist
I hope you have the rest of your business plan thought out.
Loopnet and CoStar are the databases that commercial brokers subscribe to -- if you want to get a sense of commercial rents (which btw, are quoted annually, not monthly) you might want to find a commercial broker, either through referrals, or by pounding the pavement in your target neighborhood.
I would think a call to 311 would be fruitful too.

There's a really good series of books -- one of them "How to Open a Store in New York City" -- that do a really good job of hitting all the high points.
I read one -- "How to Start a Coin-Operated Laundromat in New York City -- and got scared away when I found out NYC charges a "tap-in fee" of -- get this -- $10,000 per washing machine!!! A decent-sized laundromat would have to cough up $120,000 in cash up front just for the fucking tap-in fees!
NYC makes it very difficult, with its labyrinthine tax structure, for people to start their own businesses. That's why a clear-cut business plan is so important -- as well as a good lawyer who can guide you through the process.
ok great. why is the mayoral election relevant ? i ll have a look at the books thats a good idea. Do you have a lawyer you would recommend ?
Ali, do you have a commercial RE broker you would recommend ?
Take a look at http://www.nyc.gov/portal/site/businessexpress
>why is the mayoral election relevant ?
Certain candidates want to raise taxes, raise minimum wages,

thanks a lot ! any lawyer / RE broker recommendations ?
Washing machines create roaches.
tax and spend. democrats = nyc labyrinth
Not necessarily. Most of these regulations on top of regulations on top of regulations are just barriers set up by lobbyists of the Big Guys who are afraid of competition from Little Guys.
And most of those Big Guys are ... Republicans.
So NYCMatt, are you voting for John Catsimitidis or Christine Quinn?
Elliott Spitzer.
I personally can't wait for this batch of knuckle heads. While I am not supporter, these yoyos will undoubtedly undo everything Bloomberg put together. Quinn, who is the scariest of the bunch is who I'm voting for. My vote goes to her with that 800sf apt in the West Village in mind that I didn't purchase in 1997 for $62k. I just may have a 2nd shot in a year or so...
"While I am not supporter, these yoyos will undoubtedly undo everything Bloomberg put together."
And what would that be?
Dysfunctional corporatized schools?
Illegal soft drinks?
