I just rented a nice studio-ish unit on the UWS, love the place - but it really needs some TLC. Complete language barrier between me/my broker and the super, and the guys that came in to "paint" literally painted EVERYTHING with what seems like a rubbery film of half dry paint...over the pre-existing half inch of paint there already was. When I say everything, I mean radiator covers, chains on the door, outlets, drips on the wood floor and in the bath tub, pretty much looks like they hired a bunch of guys off the street for $50 each and gave them all a bucket of white paint and rollers, along with a bottle of Maker's. I move in tomorrow, and along with that issue, there is still crap in the fridge and cabinets, and awfully cracked tile in the kitchen. More issues than that honestly... I was and still am a homeowner, though I relocated to NYC for a few years. What, within my rights/expectations, could I ask to be done? Technically my lease starts tomorrow, but given it's not ready to move in, I'm not going to be honoring that date without a fight. I really like the place, and wouldn't have a problem to get a crew in to at least sand down and re-paint the molding...it's a nice intricately detailed job that's obviously old, but it's covered in so much paint.... Any advice appreciated. [less]
What did you wind up doing?
Newbie: Maybe he took Video of the apartment before move-in, (if he still wanted to rent that apartment).
That would prove that it was in the described bad condition.
Attached video to e-mail, sent to the landlord. At least he got the Super to clean the fridge and cabinets out and install new door-chain, and outlets. He can't possibly use electrical outlets that are painted-over and most likely have paint inside them.
Best possible: InfieldFly put his back field in motion and found another apartment to rent.
