My husband and I are in a situation where we've found ourselves needing to move out of the country at the end of this year. Our lease is until the end of March 2014. Would consulting with a real estate lawyer help in this situation? We can no longer afford the rent and being responsible for the remaining months' rent would hurt. (I was once told by a real estate agent that the easiest way to get out of a lease without penalty, if you've been a good tenant, is to say that you can no longer afford the rent and have to move. The landlord won't try to chase after you if you've made it clear that you simply do not have the funds.) I'm not trying to slip one by the landlord, but the company is huge and keeps raising our rent while other units remain empty or rent out for less than what we pay. I feel like they've been trying to drive us out anyway, so that they can charge even more. Any advice would be welcome! [less]
