Start of lease after condo board approval delay

Hello - I signed a lease with a 1/1/14 start date. All of my documents were submitted 12/6/13. However, the seller's realtor did not submit the package to the condo management company until 12/11/13. We did not receive approval until yesterday 1/7/13. The realtor is now telling me that my lease is effective from yesterday 1/7/13 even though per the condo documents, I cannot move in without giving the condo one week notice. What is my recourse? It seems like this should illegal.

The standard REBNY condo lease addresses this. It says the lease will start on the date you can move in. Check your lease. Hopefully it includes something similar.

this is quite common.
ask the owner to create a new lease with the new dates.
