Dream homes and divorce

Discussion about
I'm a reporter with the New York Observer, researching a story about home renovations and divorce and how one often seems to precede the other. I'm looking to speak with people who have had personal experience with building or renovating, then subsequently having to decide what to do with a dream house they built with their spouse. Please contact me at kvelsey AT observer.com.

I am sure there are isolated examples of a divorce following a reno relatively soon; I suspect it's uncommon.

I would contact divorce lawyers (matrimonial) for general comments and maybe they will ask a client if they'd consent to an interview. Such lawyers usually love publicity.

Are you only looking for renovations and divorce in NYC, or if there was a situation in C0lumbia C0unty, would you also be interested?

Thanks for the responses—the breakup needn't necessarily follow right on the heels of the renovations—the story is more focusing on the relationship that couples have with their houses and how that shifts from something that represents a happy, shared future to a complicated and often contested one. Alas, the houses do need to be in NYC (via my editor.)

I have been talking to divorce lawyers, who have been more than happy to discuss the issue generally and share their, often, second-hand impressions, but I haven't had any luck so far in finding someone willing to connect me to a client.

Nora Ephron/Carl Bernstein. But not NYC.

I think that people who have such problems had them anyway. Some turn to buying and renovations as a way to fill a void. Like having a kid, getting a pet, will make things better. Having a better home will make life better. Then it doesn't.

Heartburn! Good example, aboutready. I wholeheartedly agree with your analysis—I'd just like to talk to some people who have been through that progress. If you know anyone, please forward on my contact info: kvelsey At observer.com

Have you tried HARO ( http://www.helpareporter.com ) ?

Do reporters actually use that?

kvelsey: If you are a serious reporter for the Observer, you won't consider books and movies to be a "Good example". :

"Not in NYC" could include: "The War of the Roses" and "The Money Pit".
the New York Observer is a NYC newspaper.
Only a person with an imaginary "quite the career in journalism" would lead you to "anyone" "who have/has been through that progress".
I'm sure you meant to type the word "process", wholeheartedly.

Were War of the Roses and The Money Pit autobiographical?

^^ She's here again, on patrol. Looking for a fight.
Doesn't know the difference between "autobiographical" and reality.
Also doesn't know that Nora is deceased. kvelsey won't be able to interview Nora. (neither in NYC nor anywhere else).
However, if the Observer can't contact Carl : her "quite the career in journalism" will seal the deal and provide inside contact info resulting in an interview.

It's 7:25 pm, 1/30/14: she's been available, at your service, for the past hour.

She still can't provide a "cogent" comment about an "autobiography", compared to a novel.
Also is having a problem providing a "cogent" comment about the difference between a scripted movie
and a documentary.

Truth, you can't have this both ways. You can't criticize aboutready for posting immediately after you post - "on patrol", and then criticize her for not posting a rebuttal sufficiently quickly.

huntersburg: I have no need to "have this both ways".
I don't "criticize" -- that's her thing. Her "rebuttal" is not "sufficiently" logical. Nor "cogent".

For "a Yale graduate with a Yale degree":
4 hours should be enough for her to post "a rebuttal". It's now 11:30pm, 1/30/14
Yet, she has not posted any comment to back-up her previous argument. She's got nothing. She's a frustrated,
unemployable, alkie housewife with mental and emotional problems. "streeteasy" discussion boards are her outlet for her anger, resentment and lack of "cogent" logic.

^^She's back, trying to change the subject to "a nerve" that she "hit".
It took her all of last night, this morning and early afternoon to return without a cogent comment.
She calls even more attention to her stupidity and lack of aim required to "hit a nerve."
The Friday night games have begun, although it's still Friday afternoon. ("It seems" to be her dinner-hour:
at 5:45pm, she's bulking-up on alkie carbs preparing for another long drunken night.)

^^Wow: four attempted insults, posted within the last half-hour, about two minutes apart! How "cogent"!
She's got good typing skills, while "poolside in the Caribbean".
She packs-up her anger and takes it on vacation with her! She's "poolside" at the kiddie pool.
"WAH, WAH " They won't allow her to sit by the adult pool. She's "stid" at 9pm!
Trolling for a fight on streeteasy: She can't stop obsessing about me, even while on vacation.

^^OMG!: She's baaack! ("about 1 hour ago" = 3:30pm, Saturday, 2/1/14))
Drunken posting again on this streeteasy discussion thread, without any "self-awareness".
She's on "vacation" yet is "poolside in the Caribbean": angry and resentful (as usual).
Yesterday, she couldn't even string-together a "cogent" comment. She needed to post four "comments", without a "cogent" sentence as a result of her drunken efforts.

She's already fueled-up on her alkie intake, about ready for another round of "vitriol".

^^ "3 minutes ago" yet another "rapid response" posted by the drunken aboutready (at 5:30pm, Saturday afternoon: 2/1/14)
With not even one "cogent" sentence, in response.
(She has nobody else to argue with, on her Caribbean vacation. Nor will anybody chat with her. Imagine going on a vacation to the Caribbean and being disappointed because an alkie is "poolside" every day and night.
Her drunken chatter never ends.)

The other people there on vacation in the Caribbean have avoided and now have run away from her. She's ruined their vacation with her drunken ranting and raving.
Instructions from the hotel's managing supervisor:
"In the event of an aboutready emergency: use your "poolside" cushion as an anti-ar b-shit device."

^^ She's back, yet again. ("about 2 hours ago" = Tuesday, 2/4/14 , 7:30pm)
Crazily trolling "incessantly yet you can't see it in your own behavior."
Two comments posted by her, trying to start an argument with me. She has yet to post a "cogent" comment.
Never ready to let her own foolish, drunken comments go -- she continues to call attention to herself.
She has an obsession with me and needs to attempt to have a connection to me.

"Nora Ephron/Carl Bernstein. But not NYC." (aboutready on this discussion thread, "5 days ago")
"Obsessed".

aboutready posted her comment, above "about 1 hour ago".

She still hasn't posted a "cogent" comment and can only post: "Yawn."
She's tired, it's been a long day for her.

"Go to sleep,
go to sleep
you're on vacation, aboutready

The pool is deep,
the slope is steep
so try to walk steady

Don't fall in,
you can't swim
can't ride a bike,
nor drive a car
you're just drinking at the bar..."
