Comparing estimates

We are buying an apartment that needs work, and we'd like to get some estimates. Since we have limited access to the apartment before we close, we can probably only get one contractor in. Should we use his quote list details to get quotes from other contractors? Are they willing to provide quotes without seeing the place?
