Their's are the worst in most cases, at least for rentals. They give you as little detail as possible. They just want to get you in, and then they'll worry about finding you an apartment. You should see their contract ;-)

Best to use brokers who deal primarily in sales and only work with rentals as a filler for good / existing clients and strong referrals.

you can find rentals at no fee buildings by yourself. The brokers will drag you by building after building to add two months rent expense to your price. Do it yourself! brokers are a huge waste for rentals

You can use NYTIMES.com and specify in the search, no fee only. Craigslist offers the same feature.
