With that budget, you can forget about prime UWS.

Morningside Heights, I don't know. You'll be competing with the whole Columbia community.

It might be worth re-examining your reasons for wanting to live in this neighborhood. Depending on where you and your firends will be working, you might be happier in Jersey or the boroughs. Your dollars will certainly go farther outside Manhattan.

I know a few rental agents in the neighborhood, and would not recommend any of them. Sorry.

Washington Heights might be your best bet at your price range.

Riverdale.

I think Grunty is right about Washington Heights. In the same general vicinity, you can add Inwood to the mix too. As for Riverdale, if your grandparents visit, they will feel right at home.

Again, a lot hinges on where you'll all be working, and whether you want nightlife right outside your door.

BTW, even if your budget were $5K or $6K, I'm not sure I'd recommend the Upper West Side for recent college grads. You may have visited at some point, and gotten the impression from a pub crawl along Amsterdam in the low 80's that the neghborhood will let you extend your undergraduate years indefinitely. The reality of living here is very different. Our idea of excitement is dodging double strollers and wheelchairs on the way to the Children's Museum of Manhattan or Fairway.

I grew up here, and I'm raising a family here, so obviously I appreciate the neighborhood's charms. For young singles on a budget, though, I think there's much better value elsewhere. On the Upper West Side, you'll be competing for scarce family-size rentals against actual families.
