Buildings with less than 20 units, live in super?

I have been apartment hunting for the last few weeks, and have been genuinely astonished at the common charges at some of the condo buildings, particularly when there is no doorman, gym, or swimming pool. Seems to me most of it is coming from the live-in-super. I get why they have them for the large building complexes, but is it really worth paying an extra 300$ or so every month for whatever it is the super does? It must be, since it seems like everyone has them...
