Discussion about
Hello, I've asked the help of my (NYC Co-op) building handyman to hang a mirror in my apartment. He said he'll come tomorrow during his lunch break with another handyman to hang it. I asked him how much to pay him, he said "don't worry about it but if you want to tip us that'll be great". I just moved to the building and this is the first time I have someone over to perform any service. I want to be in good terms with these guys obviously. It will probably take 20 minutes for them to measure, drill and hang it. maybe even less. How much should I tip them? And another, more general question about tipping: When should I tip our doormen? Only around the holidays? every now and then? Most of them are really nice and accommodating. Thanks in advance!

I would be generous since this is your first time and handyman needs to be your best friend. I'd give 60 or 80 and tell him to split it however he feels necessary with his friend. Doormen/porter only on holidays, unless they do something nice for you like bring stuff to your door if you ask or something minor, then slip a 5. Don't wont worry otherwise, once the holidays hit and the math adds up you'll be crying for mercy.

Doormen, tip generously during the holidays unless they really go over and above in a particular day, then I would tip $10. $40 or $50 sounds about right for 2 people working 20 minutes. If the job goes faster you can tip less.

I hope you tipped your super generously on the way in. If not, do it now.

re: the handyman job--I'd err on the higher side. Perhaps $80 that they can split. Keep in mind that if you hired an outside company to hang art it would be around $150 minimum, even for a 20 minute job.
